Wellfleet UMC by Bob Gross
WELLFLEET UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
Church Council
Meeting Minutes
Date of Meeting: September 13, 2026 Location:
Fellowship Hall
Attendees: Pastor Joyce, Doug, Regis, Marnie, Ralf,
Richi, Karen, Norma, Charlie, Marilyn, Dwight, Susan, Bob, Barbara, Dan,
Nadyne, Neisha
1. Opening Prayer & Opening Remarks
The meeting was called to order with an opening prayer.
Pastor Joyce welcomed everyone and outlined the agenda, focusing on reports and
recommendations from the Worship Committee, community outreach, digital
communication, liturgical flow, facility accessibility, and upcoming church
schedules.
2. Worship Committee Recommendations & Liturgical
Flow
(Summary of the Worship Committee meeting on August 30,
2026)
- Offering
& Usher Procedure: Standardized a formal ushering process. Ushers
will start from the back pew, walk down the aisles, receive the offering
plates, collect tithes/offerings, and present the plates during the
Doxology.
- Acolyte
Ministry: Reaffirmed the theological significance of acolytes bringing
Christ’s light into worship at the beginning of the service and carrying
it out into the world at the conclusion. Children and adults are
encouraged to serve together. We will decide the detail with safety
guidelines on the next Council meeting.
- Music
Ministry & Organ Utilization:
Bill
Carlson is invited to play the organ on the first Sunday of each month.
- Congregational
Hymns: The Council discussed increasing congregational singing from
two hymns to three or four hymns per service to enrich musical
worship while maintaining sermon timing.
·
Liturgical Flow & Service Pacing:
o Greeters:
Recommended arrival time is set to 9:40 a.m. (20 minutes prior to worship).
o Bell
Ringing & Prelude: Bell ringing is standardized to 9:55 a.m. (children
and youth are invited to assist). Following the bell, David will play prelude
music to allow the congregation a quiet moment to prepare their hearts.
o Service
Duration: Target service length is approximately 1 hour. Sermon length will
be preserved while optimizing transitions and prayer pacing.
o Passing
the Peace: Reaffirmed as a meaningful tradition, but without walking around
to shake hands. The congregation will greet one another from their pews using
sign language, warm gestures, and smiles.
3. Community Outreach & Digital Communication
- Facebook
& Digital Presence: Pastor Joyce reported that a new official
Facebook page (Wellfleet UMC — not Wellfleet United
Methodist Church) was launched to share weekly sermons, pastoral letters,
and church news. This digital pivot aims to reach younger families and
seasonal visitors.
- Live
Streaming & Privacy Concerns: Evaluating options for homebound
members and seasonal visitors. To protect privacy during Joys and
Concerns, personal prayer requests will be shared prior to
recording/streaming. Sermon live-streaming will begin on September 20th,
while a decision regarding live-streaming the entire service will be made
at the next Church Council meeting.
- Local
Media Engagement: The Council discussed featuring Pastor Joyce in the
local newspaper. Marnie will contact the newspaper to coordinate an
introductory article on Pastor Joyce’s family and ministry to inform the
wider community following the 13-month pastoral transition.
- Monthly
Newsletter: Distribution will continue smoothly to past and present
members seeking to stay connected with church updates and history.
4. Children’s Ministry
- Children
& Youth Involvement: Expanding opportunities for youth to serve as
acolytes, greeters, bell ringers, offering plates handlers, and microphone
assistants.
- Children’s
Moment Readiness: A Children’s Message will be prepared every Sunday
so visiting children are welcomed, regardless of attendance numbers on a
given week.
5. Historical Preservation & Sanctuary Display
- Historical
Society Walking Tour: Noted that the local Historical Society includes
Wellfleet UMC on its Friday walking tours.
- Sanctuary
Aesthetics & Displays: The Council agreed to maintain a clean,
reverent sanctuary aesthetic while providing easily accessible church
history literature.
The Outreach Committee will design print-on-demand welcome
and history brochures featuring contact information and historical highlights
for weekday visitors.
6. Committee Governance, Security & Accessibility
- Chairperson
Leadership: Discussed appointing formal chairpersons for standing
committees to streamline governance.
- Nominating
Committee: Pastor Joyce and the Lay Leader will convene to establish
the Nominating Committee slate ahead of the upcoming Church Conference.
- Sunday
Valet Parking Initiative: To assist elderly parishioners with
navigating the steep hill from the lower parking lot, Regis volunteered to
launch a Sunday Valet Parking Service for drop-offs at the upper sanctuary
doors.
- Long-Term
Accessibility: Charlie noted past engineering proposals for a 4x6 foot
vertical platform lift/elevator. The Board of Trustees will revisit
long-term accessibility options for future facility planning.
- Facility Opening & Lockup: The monthly opening rotation is running smoothly (1st Sunday: Charlie, 2nd: Dwight, 3rd: Norma, 4th: Regis). Lockup checklists will be reinforced for all Sunday leaders.
